We all know we’re supposed to drink it, but despite that fact, it is supremely recommended for weight loss!

I love tea and I could drink all different kinds all day long.  Not only that, I could probably survive with just tea.   But that doesn’t mean you – or I – should!

athletesI also work out.  Almost every day… and when you work out regularly you are burning through more of your body’s resources faster than you realize.   Water in the human body carries nutrients to cells, flushes out toxins, sweating and in addition to that, athletes also use it for more sweating, maintaining body temperature, and building new muscle.  We all need water!

The majority of people walk around in a state of constant dehydration – and we overeat when we’re dehydrated.   I always tell clients to keep water next to them, or at least within easy reach all day long.   Because when you have water next to you, you are less likely to reach for sugary drinks, which tends to make you just want to drink more sugary drinks!  Step out of the vicious cycle.

So how much water should you drink?  Well, if you’re trying to lose weight here’s what I recommend and I know it works.  Drink your body weight, divided by 2 in ounces.   So if you weigh 136lbs, divide by 2 = 68 ounces.  That may sound like a lot but if you sip it all day long, it adds up quick and you may even find yourself drinking more.  AND yes I know, especially for us women, you’re thinking “If I drink 68oz of water every day, I will be running to the restroom every 20 minutes!”  Guess what.  You’re right.  But you want to!  That is your body flushing away fat stores, toxins, etc!  It’s a good thing!!   Then, when your body gets used to your new water consumption it won’t have to drain the bladder so often.

Believe me.  I get that not everyone likes plain water.  Especially after spending years of drinking soda.  But you’re here… and you’re still reading thus far, which means you’re probably trying to change your ways and create better habits.  With that in mind, there’s ways to make your water taste good!!  When I first started exchanging water for my sugary addictions years ago, I hated the taste of plain water.  I realized shortly after that when you have good tasting water, it makes ALL the difference in the world.  I started subscribing to a water delivery service and for a while I swore it was the “electrolytes” that were added that made it taste better.  I was wrong.  Better filters than most commercial water companies made all the difference.

Cucumber WaterThen – I started adding cucumber to it.  My favorite!  I hate lemon in my water.  In fact, it drives me crazy that restaurants assume everyone wants lemon in their water.  I can’t stand that.  I know they do it to offset the horrible taste of tap water and to kill bacteria – but ask first.

You can add whatever fruit you like!  In fact, go crazy – add a slice of fruit AND then some herbs like ginger or mint.  Yum.  Strawberries, orange, kiwi, frozen grapes, watermelon, whatever!

Point is:  drink the WATER!

Can Regular Sunshine Give You a Better Body and Health

 Ever heard the term “the sun’s deadly rays”?  The media for   a long time now has made people believe that we need to live in caves and never see the sun to prevent cancer and stay in good health.  But isn’t the sun a big contributor to all forms of life on Earth?

Throughout the majority of human existence (with the exception of the last few decades), humans have always spent more time outdoors than indoors. Nowadays however, most of us are trapped inside offices all week long and might only get out into the sun once a week, if that.

This subject of the sun and natural production of vitamin D can fill entire books, so I’ll try to summarize my opinions and what I’ve learned in the past few years through a lot of my reading.

Don’t worry, I’m not ignoring the fact that overexposure to the sun CAN cause problems, including cancer… but we need to also consider the fact that underexposure to the sun can have problems as well.

Consider these points:

1. Non-consistent sun exposure and infrequent SUNBURNS is the major cause of damage to the skin and increased risk of cancer… Think about your typical person that sits inside an office all week long without ever seeing the sun, and then gets FRIED at the pool or the beach on the weekend. THIS is where the damage occurs.

2. Regular consistent small amounts of exposure to the sun (without burning) can actually have a protective effect on the skin, increases healthful Vitamin D levels in the body, and can improve mood, help depression, and dozens of other benefits.  Each individual’s skin pigmentation determines what amount of sun exposure they can safely obtain without doing more harm than good.

For example, a very fair-skinned person with a far northern heritage might only be able to get 10-15 minutes of sun exposure over the majority of the body during peak hours before it does more harm than good.  However, someone with darker skin and a heritage that originated closer to the equator might be able to get much longer periods of regular sun exposure without doing more harm than good.

3. Increasing Vitamin D levels from regular small doses of sunshine can actually decrease cancer risk. Vitamin D itself has been shown to have a protective effect through various processes in the body.

4. This one is interesting and deserves some thought — According to Dr William Grant, a Vitamin D researcher, cancer rates in those living at high latitudes (farther north) such as Iceland are approximately 4 TIMES the cancer rates of those living at lower latitudes (closer to the equator) in the tropics.

Hmm, yet those people living in the tropics are getting MUCH higher levels of those so-called “deadly sun rays”… but they are also producing higher levels of protective Vitamin D on average too.

5. Vitamin D is actually produced into a hormone in our bodies and regulates hundreds of processes in the body, and is WAY MORE important to almost every single aspect of your health than most people realize. There is even evidence that due to the regulation of so many hormonal processes in our bodies that can be affected by Vitamin D, producing enough Vitamin D in your body can even help with fat loss, muscle building, blood sugar control, and hundreds of other factors.

6. It is hard to obtain enough Vitamin D from dietary sources alone (egg yolks, organ meats, and fatty fish are good sources, but still relatively small). The best utilized source of Vitamin D is what we produce in our bodies from moderate regular sun exposure over large portions of the body without burning.

7. An antioxidant-rich diet can help to protect the skin (to an extent) from damage if you get too much sun exposure. This means that getting lots of antioxidants from things such as various teas (green, black, white, rooibos, yerba mate, chammomile, etc), various berries, fruits, vegetables, beta carotene, nuts, olive oil, etc, etc can help to protect your skin. Make sure to pick up some Shakeology here to help increase your antioxidant levels in the body.

8. Another point that proves that irregular burning is the major cause of damage and not regular small doses of sunshine… Rates of skin cancer are typically higher in areas of the body that get irregular sun and occasional burning as opposed to areas of the body that have received consistent sun for your entire life.

So what’s the best way to do this in a healthy way while minimizing sun overexposure risk?

In the spring, try to start with just small periods in the sun such as 10-15 minutes/day.  Make sure to try to NEVER get a sunburn!  Gradual small doses of sunshine over a large part of your body almost daily helps your body produce the most beneficial and protective Vitamin D levels.

Avoid extended periods of overexposure to the sun on large portions of your body… If you’re going to be out for several hours or an entire day in the sun, you’ll still need to make sure to cover up appropriately (based on your individual skin pigmentation and sensitivity) to prevent burning and skin damage… remember that we’re talking about regular small doses of sunshine that is beneficial, not entire days out in the sun without covering up.

I would caution against relying heavily on chemical-based sunscreens as most of the chemicals used in sunscreens are potentially carcinogenic and are also known to be estrogenic, as they absorb through your skin and into your body.  If you’re going to use a lotion based sunblock, you’re best bet is a natural form that uses zinc oxide or titanium dioxide… These are natural sunblocks that don’t absorb into your skin, but rather sit on top of the skin’s surface and block the rays.  This is a big difference compared to the harmful chemicals that are in most sunscreens (various benzones, homosalate, etc).

Load up on antioxidant-rich foods such as various teas, fruits and veggies, berries, etc daily to help prevent free radical damage and protect your skin.

Ok, so it’s Been 2 months

My gosh it’s almost April!  Where has the time gone?

So to catch up on the past couple months.  I got the pictures back from the photographer!  They are amazing …. check them out here.  I created a slide show there so I mixed in some other pics that I took.  The ones in black and white are from my new favorite photographer:  Jennifer at O’Grace Photography!  (Jennifer, you’re welcome for the plug!)

As far as our move went, we are all unpacked now.  But we still haven’t hung our pictures.  Hopefully, I can get Frank to do it tomorrow.

Today, I went to Sephora and bought Kinerase’s Instant Radiance Facial Peel and I just put it on.  It really tingled when I first put it on but it has since stopped.  The directions say not to rinse it off but that seems weird.   As you all know, I have been using Kinerase since November and I am mad crazy about it!  Plus, every time I go to Sephora I get some more samples of different Kinerase products so I think my next purchase from them will either be the day cream or the skin brightening serum and the concentrated spot treatment.

I have noticed on other websites that people are appalled at how much the Kinerase line is but it is such a worthwhile investment.  The facial peel today was $75 but that bought me 15 treatments!  Where can you get 15 peels for $75?  Not to mention, everything I bought  in December I still have.  I have just now gotten half way through the cleanser.

You can’t wait til you’re 50 to try to reverse the signs of aging!  Plus, at that time a face lift will cost me much more than my Kinerase!

Let’s see …. what else has happened?  Hmm, oh yeah how could I forget this one?  Ok, so January was 12 months after the vaginal delivery follow up for Baby Frankie.  So I went and got the annual pap smear done and talked with my doctor about birth control.  I mentioned I was extremely interested in the IUD concept because I am horrible about remembering to take the pill.  So I made an appointment for early February and I went and had Mirena “installed”. 

Then, that very same day, two hours after I left the doctor’s office I get a phone call from their office that my pap smear results came in and I have some abnormal cells on the cervix which could be pre-cancerous cells.   Therefore, I was told I needed to schedule a colpolscopy.   “A what?”  Yes, that’s exactly what I said.  So I went in to have this procedure done on March 6th and had one of the worst OB experiences I’ve ever had. 

It started with my trusted doctor of 12 years not being in the office that day.  They scheduled this procedure for me on a day where he was on call and got called in to the hospital to deliver a baby.  Fantastic for that mom … but terrible for me.  I had a female doctor from India perform this.  She was awful!  Not to mention, mean!  And I could not understand her when she spoke.  I do not like female OB/GYN’s.  They have no compassion whatsoever!  At least with a guy doctor he has not experienced any of this from the woman’s perspective so they are much more patient, sympathetic and considerate. 

But during the procedure she actually told me that the IUD shouldn’t have been installed without making sure the PAP results cleared me for it.  So again, a mistake they made.  Is it just me, or all Indian doctors kind of mean? 

Anywho, I am still awaiting my results which she told me would take 2-4 weeks.  Yesterday marked 3 weeks.   So wish me luck that it’s not anything serious and I will make sure to post the outcome.

A Beauty Must Have

I have to share with the world another beauty secret:

Kinerase.  It all started back in November when I went to Sephora to get my beloved mascara.  Then I get home and open my bag and see a few free samples.  Mind you, I have been a devoted Dermalogica connoisseur for almost 3 years.  But that night I tried something new.  It was the Kinerase Extreme Face Lift.  I don’t really believe I need a face lift just yet but thought I’d try it anyways.

It remarkably smoothed my skin within seconds!  I used it for the next week and only wore it on days I wore makeup to make the makeup look super smooth.

So, a couple days before Thanksgiving I went to the mall to go buy this wonderful serum and I find out its $150.  I was bummed.   But the Kinerase “specialist” at Sephora showed me the kit that comes with the extreme lift, a cleanser, cream and eye cream for $130.

But I wasn’t about to spend $130 on me right before Christmas so . . . I went home and told Frank to buy this for me for Christmas!

Christmas morning comes around and YAY he bought it for me.  Here’s the thing though:  the extreme face lift that came in the kit is the same size as the free sample I had before!!! 

But, I have been using the cleanser, cream and the lift ever since Christmas and I am in love with it.  My skin looks healthier.  It never looks dry anymore.  I only have 2 problems with it.  The smell isn’t really that great.  It smells like butter.  Second, the kit didn’t come with an SPF cream.  So naturally, now I need the SPF cream, the extreme lift cream and I want their Ultimate night moisturizer.  I tried it and I fell in love with that too.

So I think I’ll head to the mall today.  Hmmm, better yet I’ll have Frank get it for me for Valentine’s Day!
